Kentucky Lake Waterfowl Festival Some 50 exhibitors from five states were on hand for last Saturday’s 8th Annual Kentucky Lake Waterfowl Festival in Big Sandy. Despite the heat, the event was another huge success as some 3,500 people were on hand to partake in both the TWRA duck blind drawing and festival. “Our exhibitors told us it was a great event and most all indicated they would be back next year,” said festival spokesman Steve McCadams, Paris Ducks Unlimited committee member. “The TWRA drawing was down some in registration but that’s not surprising given the heat, wet conditions in the management areas at planting time, and tougher regulations from the agency on buying and selling blinds.” “Last year was the all-time record high for people entering the duck blind draw so when compared to the last five years it was still a huge turnout.” From Labrador puppies to wildlife art, callmakers, decoys, clothing and more, the event had a lot to see for anyone attending. Several organizations benefited from the local event with fundraising activities for the Big Sandy Volunteer Fire Department, Little League, Chamber of Commerce, and Ducks Unlimited’s conservation efforts. Harvest Outdoor Ministries assisted with the duck and goose calling contests where several entered the competition beneath the shade of towering oaks. Three-time World Champion Duck Calling Mike McLemore of Huntingdon emceed the contests. Winning the Kentucky Lake Open Junior Duck Calling (under 16) was 15-year old Slayton Gearin of Gleason, TN. He also placed second in the adult contest! Second place in the Junior Duck Calling was Caleb Rollins of Bradford, TN. Winning the Kentucky Lake Open Duck Calling Contest was Ricky Prince of Humboldt. Third place went to Michael Pauley of Ashland City, TN. The Kentucky Lake Open Goose Calling Contest winner was Scott Courtney of Lee Summitt, MO. Second place went to Richie McKnight of Dawson Springs, KY. Third place went to Jason Fulkerson of Bonnie, IL. A tip of the hat to all those who attended and supported this community event, along with the City of Big Sandy for their assistance in making it another huge success. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, which will be held on the first Saturday in August.
