Tennessee Turkey Population for 2001
by Steve McCadams

  www.stevemccadams.com

Turkey hunters will be glad to hear the good news about survival rates for young of the year birds, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). Each spring and summer, the TWRA conducts counts of adult and young wild turkeys to get an estimate reproductive success.

TWRA Region I Turkey Biologist Alan Peterson said, " the preliminary indications are that a lot of turkeys hatched and survived the summer this year. The number of poults (young turkeys) surviving through the summer was good.

It takes 2.7 poults per hen in August just to maintain a stable population.  The preliminary numbers shows the poults per hen ratio will be greater than this."

Early life is the most hazardous time for any wild animal. Many young turkeys die in the spring so the most important sign of whether or not populations will increase, is indicated by the number which survive through the end of summer.

The 2001 spring turkey harvest of over 29,000 birds set a new record for Tennessee. This passed the previous record of 23,139 set in 2000 and is also a six fold increase from nine years ago when only 5,032 turkeys were harvested in 1992.
