Most squirrel hunters think about the late summer season opener when you scan the hickories or beech trees where the bushy tails are cutting acorns. However, the Volunteer State has spring season that’s about to open up and old timers used to refer to it as the “mulberry season” for squirrels. Tennessee’s spring squirrel season will open on Saturday, May 10. This year, the season will run through June 8. As in fall hunting seasons, fox, red, and gray squirrels are allowed to be harvested, with a daily bag limit of 10 squirrels. Several wildlife management areas are also open for spring squirrel hunting during this time. Hunters need to refer to the 2007/2008 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide for specific regulations and license requirements. Regulations are also available on the TWRA web page at www.tnwildlife.org .
