Anglers Lynn Gilliam and Tim Ridley, both of McKenzie, TN., won the Crappie USA Classic recently on Alabama's Pickwick Lake. The duo's two-day fishing trip earned them $92,000 in prizes and cash.

America has 38 million anglers and hunters who spend $70 million a year on their sports, according to a 2001 survey by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Analysis of the report by the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation and the National Shooting Sports Foundation noted that excise taxes on hunting and fishing gear generates $1.7 billion a year and provides the financial backbone to America's wildlife management programs.

In July a marine patrol officer stopped a 30-foot powerboat near downtown Miami and ticketed the driver for going too fast through a manatee zone. O. J. Simpson has entered a plea of not guilty.

ESPN2 is launching The New American Sportsman, but it won't be like ABC's old hunting and fishing show hosted by Curt Gowdy. Ad Age magazine reported that the program wants to score a younger audience so it will be more politically correct. For example, celebrity hunters will now shoot with dart guns so animals can be tagged and released for research purposes.
