Report for September 7th, 2001
This week's fishing report indicates crappie,
white bass (stripes),
catfish, and bass action holding up well along Kentucky Lake.
Slightly cooler conditions have seen a decrease in surface temperatures
this past week. A few cool nights and cloudy days have helped lower the
readings to the 80 to 84 degree range.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was actually on the rise
at midweek with readings on Tuesday of 357. By the latter part of the
this week TVA indicates readings will be 357.3.
Crappie have been moving up some and starting to show signs of departure
from the extremely deep venues where they spent the summer. While some
fish remain on the deep sides of ledges in the 20 to 25 feet range,
action has increased in the 12 to 15 foot zones.
Some of the manmade stakebeds and brush piles in 11 to 13 foot depths are
producing crappie, although several small fish are residing there. Look
for those areas to improve over the next few weeks as conditions cool.
Live minnows and jigs tipped with minnows are working well. Jig colors
such as chartreuse with metal flake, motor oil, clear with sparkle, and
red and chartreuse combo were a few of the popular choices.
Bass have begun moving up on the gravel banks in the early morning and
late afternoon periods as shad are there in big numbers. The lowlight
hours will find the shad feeding on midge hatches and the bass aren't
far behind.
Working the gravel banks with surface lures will produce. And, a lot of
grass beds are visible along the shallow flats, islands, and the backs
of creeks. Tossing buzzbaits around the edges and working floating
worms, flukes, and weed beds frogs will produce some nice topwater
action.
Main lake ledges are still giving up a big smallmouth now and then. Some
largemouth are taking Carolina rigs and big deep diving crankbaits as
well.
White bass (stripes) have been busting shad on the surface this week.
Action continues in the jumps whenever the calm days are present. Small
spinners and jerk baits have been producing well on the stripes.
Earlier this week I found several schools of stripes along main lake
ledges. Mixed in were a few rockfish (stripers) too, who tested the
drags of light spinner reels and baitcasters.
Catfish were still hitting along the main river channel and continued to
show an appetite for chicken livers, night crawlers, and catalpa worms.
Some decent stringers were coming from depths of 25 to 40 feet.
With a gradual cooling trend taking place, look for crappie and bass to
begin moving toward shallow areas in the coming weeks. Shad are already
moving toward shallow zones and when surface temperatures cool back into
the low to mid 70's, action will improve in secondary flats and big
bays.
Summer patterns are still in place for most species but fall transitions
will soon begin.
