ANGLERS AWAIT COOLER CONDITIONS

This week’s fishing report has been kind of ho-hum for most crappie anglers but look for action to improve soon as cooler weather is on the way for this weekend, say area meteorologists.

Observed lake elevation at Kentucky Dam this week was 355.9. Upstream at New Johnsonville the reading was 355.8. The reservoir continues to fall slowly.

Surface temperatures remain in the 82 to 85 degree range this week. There haven’t been any cool night lately as summer is still very much holding on to weather patterns.

Catfishermen are still finding action along the main river channel in depths of 25 to 30 feet. Some current has been present this week as Kentucky Lake has been falling slowly.

Baits of choice have been chicken liver, nightcrawlers, leeches, and some commercial stink baits. Action should hold up for several weeks.

Meanwhile, crappie action was slow this week but watch for that to change soon as we’re about to enter a transition period for the area’s most popular panfish. Cooler conditions will see improvement in the shallow water areas, as more baitfish move into what becomes a big comfort zone for them.

Some crappie were caught in the deep confines of main lake ledges in such depths as 16 to 22 feet recently. Live minnows have been producing best.

Bass anglers continue to find fish in relatively shallow structure such as logs, stumps, grass beds, and exposed crappie beds.

Casting spinnerbaits and shallow running crankbaits has paid off recently as have worms and some suspending jerk baits.

Bass have been hitting shad on early morning and late afternoon gravel banks too.

White bass action has also been slow with not much to report in terms of surface action. Seems the white bass have not been around much this summer and those normal feeding frenzies where surface action is fast has been rare.

Look for overall fishing activity to improve soon.
