Kentucky Lake Fishing Report
Brought to you by: Fishtale Lodge

Report for September 21st, 2001

This week's fishing report has crappie and bass hitting good along Kentucky Lake. Some catfish action is still being reported too, along with an occasional school of white bass busting the surface.

Observed elevation this week in the Paris Landing area was 355.8 and falling slowly. Surface temperatures were in the 75 to 79 degree range. A few cool nights saw surface temperatures start out around 73 in the early morning hours only to warm into the upper 70's by afternoon.

Crappie have been hitting good but still somewhat stubborn to move up into shallow areas. Surface temperatures need to cool down into the low 70's before any further movement will take place.

I've been on the lake several days this week in search of crappie and found most of the larger fish still relating to deeper areas. Such depth ranges as 18 to 25 feet were producing several fish.

On the deep side of the sandbars you'll find several small fish too  but there's some decent ones mixed in with them.

A few scattered crappie were in my stakebeds and brushpiles around such depth ranges as 10 to 13 feet but the larger fish were few and far between. There were even a few fish in some 8-10 structure but not concentrated. However, a cool night or two, coupled with a cloudy day could see action improve quickly in these areas.

Live shiner minnows have been producing well as have red and chartreuse hollow body jigs. And, tipping a jig with a minnow has worked well too.

Water color in the Tennessee River was sporting a little stain while Big Sandy is still relatively clear.

Bass activity has improved along the gravel banks and visible grassbeds. Some of the larger fish were still lingering on the main lake drop-offs this week as anglers tossed crankbaits, jigs, and Carolina rigs in the main lake areas.

A lot of smaller bass are feeding around the grassbeds and sloping gravel banks. Shad are showing up daily with the main periods of activity being early and late in the day.

Some fish are taking topwater lures such as Rebel's Pop-R, Heddon's Zara Spook, Smithwick's Devil's Horse, and various buzzbaits when worked around the grass and gravel.

Crankbaits are still producing too around big chunk rock. Some finesse baits such as flukes are fooling some of the finicky fish into striking.

From the catfish department comes some decent reports of fish hitting in the 20 to 30 foot zones along the main river bank. Cut shad, chicken livers, catalpa worms, and nightcrawlers are paying off.

The calm days are still allowing a few scattered bursts from white bass. Some have been taken in the jumps this week around main lake sandbars that are adjacent to the main river.

Look for crappie and bass patterns to remain as they are until the next cooling trend sends surface temperatures down into the 70-degree range. Then, additional movement to shallow areas is likely to occur.
