Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

September 20th, 2002

This week’s fishing report has action holding up well for bass, crappie, and catfish anglers.

Fall officially begins on Monday (September 23) but cooler temperatures have been sluggish in arriving for anglers who are hoping for lower surface temperatures.

Warm weather continues to drive the overall fishing scene but cooler conditions are on the horizon.

Surface temperatures this week were in the 77 to 81 degree range. That’s a little above normal for this time of year.

Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 355.7 and at midweek was actually rising slowly. Kentucky Dam was readings of 355.8 and rising slowly.

Water color is still quite clear in the Big Sandy and Tennessee River area.

Bass have been hitting good around visible stickups such as logs and stakebeds in the backs of coves and on flats. Some fish are also coming off gravel points and secondary ledges while others are chasing shad around visible grassbeds.

Tossing buzsbaits, jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits has produced this week. A few anglers are still fishing jig and pork combos, along with shad colored crankbaits.

Crappie had moved up some last week but by this week were backing off to deeper areas in the main lake. Some scattered fish were taken in 9 to 13 foot zones but the bulk of fish had pulled back to 17 to 22 foot areas at midweek in the Paris Landing area.

Look for improved shallow water action in the week ahead if cooler conditions occur, along with some cloud cover.

Catfish were hitting good along deep ledges in 20 to 25 foot areas. Minnows, nightcrawlers, and leeches were producing well.

Although fall weather has been stubborn to take over, watch for things to change this week stimulating movement to shallow areas by crappie and bass.
