kentucky lake fishing report

Report for the week of Sept.11th

Fishing in the Paris Landing sector of Kentucky Lake this week has
improved the attitude of both the fish and the fishermen. Thanks to a cool front, it's much more pleasant to be out on the lake lately.

Surface temperatures are cooling somewhat and that should stimulate
increased activity in the baitfish movement. Not too far behind will be the crappie and bass.

For the last few weeks surface temperatures have been clinging to the
84 to 88 degree range but cool nights have helped bring temps down into the 78 to 82 degree range. By weeks end it may be cooler than that, a transition that will suit local anglers just fine.

Elevation in this area of Kentucky Lake is 355.9, which is down a few inches from last week's report.

Crappie anglers are seeing some improvement in action since the cool
spell. Some fish are being taken in the 10 to 14 foot zones with some fish caught in 8 to 10 foot depths. Look for the crappie improve this next week as they follow the shad to shallow bays and flats off the main lake. Those 8 to 12 foot zones will begin to produce in the weeks ahead, especially when the water cools another few degrees.

Bass anglers are still having to earn what they catch, although the cooler weather has helped them too. Some fish are chasing shad on the gravel banks in the later afternoons and early mornings. Shallow running crankbaits and some surface lures are yielding some strikes.
There's still some bass lingering on the ledges in the main lake areas
but look for those fish to move up to shallow stump rows and humps near shorelines in the weeks ahead.

Catfish are still fair but not consistent as anglers continue to work the main river banks using cut shad, liver and nightcrawlers for bait. A few good catches have been reported between Paris Landing and Danville levee.

Fall doesn't officially arrive until September 22. However, the fall
pattern for crappie and bass anglers is about to begin. Expect improvement this next week, thanks to a cool front that has been long overdue in its arrival to the Kentucky Lake area. Hopefully, the hot and humid days
are behind us.
