NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK

Many people will head out on the water this summer to enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, water skiing and more. Unfortunately, too often both experienced and inexperienced boaters have a false sense of security and don’t wear life jackets.

Earlier this week the U.S. Coast Guard released the latest recreational boating statistics. Tennessee ranks No. 7 in the nation for boating accidents and No. 6 in the nation for boating fatalities, with boating mishaps causing 20 deaths in the state in 2013 alone.

While across the nation the number of boating accidents decreased 10% and the number of boating deaths decreased 14% compared to 2012, drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities and 84 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

In preparation for the summer boating season, the National Safe Boating Council will kick off its national Wear It! campaign promoting safe boating and life jacket wear with National Safe Boating Week, which runs from May 17-23, and the campaign continues throughout the summer.
