REFUGE REOPENS CLOSED ROAD

The Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge announces the reopening of Refuge Lane in the Duck River bottoms area of the Duck River Unit this Friday.

Recently this area has been temporarily closed due to several large construction projects throughout the bottoms.  Because the refuge is in the midst of the waterfowl season, Refuge Lane, the main road leading through the bottoms and the road leading to the refuge subheadquarters will be the only ones to reopen.  These are the only roads in the bottoms that are normally open in the winter.
Improvements in the Duck River bottoms included road improvements to Refuge Lane, improving and reworking several levee roads, replacing water control structures, the removal of unsafe structures, and installing fortified spillways.  This road construction project has improved the roads for a new auto tour opening on March 15th.  This auto tour was designed to allow more seasonal access to the bottoms for a wider range of wildlife viewing opportunities.  The new auto tour will eventually include interpretive signs about wildlife management activities in the bottoms.
Refuge Manager John Taylor wants to thank the public for their patience during this extended closure and hopes that the public will take some time this winter to view the waterfowl and see all the improvements made to the Duck River bottoms.  Additionally, as a thank you for the public’s patience, a special Bald Eagle/Waterfowl Tour is planned for the public on Saturday, January 12th from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.  This self guided tour allows the public to drive behind closed areas for a special afternoon of wildlife viewing.      For more information on the opening of Refuge Lane or on the public Bald Eagle/Waterfowl Tour, please call the refuge office Monday – Friday from 7:00 – 3:30 pm at 642-2091.
