Fishing this week has been more like summer than fall. Hot weather
has
hung around, keeping surface temperatures on Kentucky Lake in the 72 to
75 degree range.
That's about to change as a strong cold front is descending on the
area this weekend which will cool things down.
Fall is normally a stable season with very few cold fronts and
drastic
changes. However, all the weathermen are talking about cold weather this
weekend so it's going to feel like we went from summer to winter and
skipped fall.
Better dig out the coveralls and overcoat this weekend if you
plan to
be out on the lake. Yet. once the cold spell blows through, it will
really feel nice on the lake next week and it could improve fishing.
From the crappie department the news has been somewhat
slower than normal this past week. Several small fish showing up but
action has been a bit below average. Some high skies, hot temperatures
and clear water have had an adverse effect on the shallow, manmade fish
attractors such as stakebeds and brushpiles.
Normally, the fish are in the 6 to 12 foot zone at this time of
the
year and a few fish lingering in the deep water. That hasn't been the
case this past week but even the deep sandbars have been slower to
produce too.
Anglers are working the main lake ledges with minnows and jigs,
finding
some scattered fish. There's likely some wind ahead this weekend until
the front blows through so fishing those open water areas will be tough.
Perhaps the coves and secondary flats will produce more fish once the
water cools this weekend.
Bass anglers are still having it tough and earning every
fish they
catch. Local tournament reflect the status of the bass fishery as low
numbers and light stringers are being brought to the weigh-in lines.
Some smaller fish are being taken on spinnerbaits and crankbaits
around gravel banks and shallow stumps or crappie beds in the coves.
And, a jig and pig combo has been producing some of the larger fish.
A few smallmouth continue to show up as anglers work the
sloping ledges with Carolina rigged worms and other finesse baits in a
slow presentation cast on light tackle.
Lake elevation is in the 354.9 range here at Paris Landing.
That's getting close to winter pool so be careful out there. There's a
stump somewhere just waiting to nick your lower unit and bend that prop
shaft!
