Report for October 5th, 2001
This week's fishing report is a good one for fall
fishing enthusiasts. The weather has been great for most of the week
with jacket mornings and shirt sleeve afternoons.
A few mornings greeting early rising anglers with fog over much of
Kentucky Lake but that was a small price to pay for a sunny day where
light and variable winds made it a pleasure just to be out there.
Meanwhile, surface temperatures are in the 67 to 71 degree range.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 354.9. TVA
indicated that reading would hold for the next several days. Last week
the reservoir was falling slowly each day.
Crappie anglers continue to enjoy success as the fish take on a fall
pattern with an appetite. A lot of crappie are moving into the 7 to 13
foot zones, although falling lake levels earlier this week appeared to
keep fish at vantage points near deep water.
Structure on ledges and humps seemed to appeal to crappie that
wanted the best of both worlds with shallow and deep water close by.
However, with stable lake levels predicted and approaching cloud cover,
expect fish to improve in flats and backs of large bays this week.
A cool spell is in the forecast for this weekend and that might slow
action down or a day or so. Yet cooler water temperatures are a likely
result so look for improved activity early next week, especially on
those flats and backs of bays where stakebeds and brush piles are found.
Jigs are producing well. Such colors as green and pumpkin pepper on
a unpainted leadhead has been producing as has a orange lead head and
dark green body. Live minnows are also working.
Some stained water is present over on the Tennessee River area and
in the backs of a few bays on Big Sandy. The main lake portion of Big
Sandy and West Sandy is relatively clear.
Bass action has been good along gravel banks in the early morning
and late afternoon hours. Surface lures continue to produce when the
shad are on
top and popping in the lowlight conditions.
Spinnerbaits and crankbaits in the shad colors are producing too.
Some jerk baits and Carolina rigged worms and lizards were producing as
well. Smallmouth were being taken on a few rock bluffs while largemouth
were relating to gravel and exposed grass beds.
Fishing is worth going so take advantage of the nice fall weather
and strike a trot toward the lake. Be cautious as to the lower lake
levels while running your boat or pontoon. Pay close attention to
channel markers and don't take those open water shortcuts like you did
back in the summer!
