Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:
October 25th, 2002
From the
fishing scene on Kentucky Lake comes good news for crappie anglers. And,
action for bass and catfish continues to hold up well.
Fall
patterns have been interrupted for the last several weeks by cold fronts
and thunderstorms but this past week saw a return to normal conditions
where moderate temperatures and light winds greeted fishermen.
Some
nice stringers of crappie have been taken lately as anglers work the
deep ledges in the main lake where brush and stumps can be found.
Popular depth ranges have been 18 to 23 feet as the lake has been
falling and likely pulled many crappie back to the deep sides of
sandbars.
I found
fish on the deep sides of ledges earlier this week after action slowed
in shallow water. A few cloudy days could see action resume in shallow
structure, especially if the lake levels hold steady or see a slight
rise.
Some
fish were taken in 9 to 12 foot areas where manmade brush piles and
stake beds were found. While fish there have been quite scattered, look
for action in shallow areas to improve this weekend and into next week
as lake levels stabilize. There has been a lot of shad activity on the
shallow flats and secondary bays.
Live
shiner minnows have produced well as have 1/16-ounce jigs in the green
and lime colored lead heads armed with clear or light colored skirts.
Observed
lake elevation in the Paris Landing area has been somewhat lower than
last week with readings near the winter pool mark of 354.4. The lake has
been falling slowly all week but has now stabilized and could see a
slight rise this weekend if predicted rains arrive.
Lake
elevation at Kentucky Dam was 354.6 and upstream at New Johnsonville
readings were in the 354.5 range.
Surface
temperatures have cooled into the 60-t0 63-degree range. Watercolor is
sporting a little stain in some bays in Big Sandy while the main lake is
relatively clear.
Bass
continue to relate to rock and gravel points. Some fish have been taken
off visible stickups such as logs, crappie beds, and docks.
Popular
lures have been shallow running shad colored crankbaits, chartreuse and
blue-skirted spinnerbaits, Slugo jerk worms, and a few surface lures.
Carolina
rigged worms and lizards are still producing on deeper areas and around
grass beds.
Some
good smallmouth have been taken as anglers work main lake ledges tossing
small hair jigs and grubs. A 5-fish limit weighing 23-pounds won last
Saturday’s Froggy Buddy Bass Tournament here at Paris Landing so there’s
some good bronzeback fishing to be had.
Watch
for the increase in gull activity and you’ll know where the baitfish are
hitting the surface. Some scattered activity from schools of white bass
has been noticed too.
Catfish
anglers are still working the main riverbank and finding action. Depths
of 20 to 35 feet have been giving up some good fish. Baits such as
chicken livers and nightcrawlers are working best.
Kentucky
Lake is back down to its low fall elevation levels so boaters are
reminded to use caution when navigating the main lake flats. Avoid
taking shortcuts and follow the channel markers this time of year!
