Weather is cooling down and
Fishing is Picking Up on Kentucky Lake!
Report for October 24th, 2000
Fishing this week on Kentucky Lake has been the beneficiary of
some
great weather. And, the action has improved in the crappie and bass
departments as a result.
Light winds and warm temperatures have greeted anglers for several
days in a row. In addition to nice weather the colors are rapidly
changing and the peak of the fall foliage is near. It's worth a trip on
the lake just to see the yellow of the hickories and the reds of black
gum trees along the ridges.
If you're waiting for some good fishing and beautiful scenery
then wait no longer. The time is now.
Crappie have improved this week and several success stories
have come in from anglers stalking the stake beds and shallow brushpiles
in the 8 to 12 foot zones. And, there's still some dandy fish being
taken on the ledges in deeper water too.
Jigs in the chartreuse and white combo colored skirts have been
hot as
have the pink and pearl, clear with sparkle and lime and yellow combo
colors. Live minnows are producing too.
The surface temperature in the Paris Landing area is
starting out at
62 degrees in the mornings and warming to the 66 degree mark by
midafternoon.
Observed lake elevation is around 354.8 and the lake is clear in
many
areas. A little stained water can be found on the Tennessee River but
most of the creeks in both Big Sandy and elsewhere are quite clear. Most
anglers would prefer a little more stain in the water but a lack of
rain has likely contributed to the clear conditions.
Some anglers are having success as they cast light spinning tackle
armed with twister tail grubs. Laying back off the shallow cover
and casting doesn't spook the fish as bad as getting the boat right on
top of them, especially in shallow water.
Bass action has improved somewhat as anglers tossing shad imitation
colored crankbaits along rocky bluffs are scoring. While there's a lot
of small fish being taken, a few chunks are mixed in there too.
Shad are abundant in many areas and finding some rock points near
deep water where a little wind is blowing in on the shore seems to
appeal.
There's a lot of white bass and yellow bass chasing shad
along the rock banks and the largemouth and smallmouth are running
with them. Some surface activity is being seen on the calm days too so
keep an eye out for the baitfish action and also watch the gulls. Those
feathered fishermen will often lead you to the schools of active
baitfish this time of year.
Look for action to remain good this next week for crappie, bass
and
white bass action all along Kentucky Lake. Don't let these beautiful
days of good fishing slip by. Make plans to be on the lake this next
week and you'll see what I mean.
