Report for October 12th, 2001
Fishing this week on Kentucky Lake had a mixture of
weather patterns that altered the patterns of the fish and the
fishermen.
Fall is normally stable in terms of wind and overall weather
patterns but such was not the case as gale winds and thunderstorms
whipped the lake up to a froth most of the week. Wind warnings on area
lakes had white caps in open water areas that prevented anglers from
working the main lake flats and ledges for crappie.
Surface temperatures were in the 63 to 67 degree range. Observed
lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 354.9 but expected to rise
slowly these next few days as heavy rains are predicted across the TVA
valley.
Crappie have been finicky this week but several fish are being
caught in the 9 to 12 foot zones in both bays and main lake flats. And,
I found a good grade of fish on main lake ledges earlier in the week.
Depths of 13 to 15 feet were producing but occasionally I found a fish
lingering on the deep side of the ledge in 17 to 20 feet.
For the rest of the week high winds caused me to fish stake beds and
brush piles in 7 to 13 feet in the bays. A few fish are there but
scattered.
Jigs tipped with minnows are producing. Also, jigs in the red and
chartreuse, aqua blue with metal flake, and various shades of pearl have
been paying off. Tipping jigs with Kodiak fish attractant or Berkley's
Power Bait Crappie Nibbles seems to enhance the lure's ability to
produce more strikes.
Once the weekend rains and thunderstorms pass, fishing should resume
to normal patterns and improve this next week.
Bass anglers are still finding fish on those grass beds.
Spinnerbaits and some crankbaits like the Bill Lewis Rattle Trap have
been producing.
Floating worms, flukes, and various jerk baits are producing too.
Working the gravel banks with crankbaits and jig and pig combos are
still working too. Some bass have moved up to shallow rock points and
roadbeds, along with visible stumps and crappie beds in the backs of
creeks.
A few smallmouth are still lingering around long points off the
main river and along riprap rock areas.
Next week should see overall fishing improve for both crappie and
bass anglers. Already the trees are turning colors so make plans to
partake of the fall fishing while all that beauty surrounds you.
