Report for November 9th, 2001
Nice weather greeted anglers this week as fall
returned to normalcy. Cool morning and warm afternoons have been enjoyed
on the lake. Winds have been light too, allowing open water access to
main lake fishing spots.
Crappie continue to hit good with several fish still coming from
deeper ledges out in the main lake. Drop-offs are holding some good
numbers of fish, which are relating to the deeper sides of ledges in 18
to 24 feet.
That's not to say a few fish haven't been caught in shallow brush
piles and stake beds in the 7 to 12 foot zones but a lot of the fish in
the Paris Landing area were hitting in the deep zones.
Several days this past week I found fish scattered in shallow
structure but dropped back to deeper venues in the main lake and
increased results. Locating those deep stumps off the edge of the
sandbars seemed to pay off best.
Some large crappie in the two-pound range have been showing up.
You'll catch a lot of smaller fish too right there with them
Look for action to improve in shallow areas this next week as
lake levels stabilize and surface temperatures hold around the upper
50's and low 60's. There's a lot of shad moving shallow so crappie are
not far behind.
. Baits of choice have been live shiner minnows fished on double
hook, bottom-bumping rigs. Jigs in the 1/8 to ¼ ounce have also paid
dividends when vertical fished in the deep areas. Productive colors were
blue and pearl, red and chartreuse, grape and chartreuse, and
fluorescent chartreuse with red metal flake.
Surface temperatures were rebounding somewhat this week and reading
in the 56 to 64 degree range. Water levels were rising slightly.
Observed elevation in the Paris Landing area was 355.2. Look for lake
stages to fall slowly this next week, barring any heavy rains.
Bass action has improved the last week with several nice stringers
coming from submerged grass beds, rocky banks, and gravel points.
Spinnerbaits worked over shallow grass has been productive as has
some worms and jerk baits. Crankbaits in the shad color have work well
as a lot of the bass are chasing the baitfish up around shallow gravel
banks.
Some white bass have been showing up too along the rock and gravel
bank areas. The abundance of shad has attracted largemouth, spotted, and
smallmouth. Wind blowing in toward rocky banks and stirring up the
bottom adds color to the water but it has pushed the baitfish in there
too. So, keep an eye on such places this next week for some fast action.
Catfish have been on the prowl lately on the main river. Some dandy
stringers have been reported this week. Depths of 20 to 25 feet have
produced. Such baits as nightcrawlers and cut shad have been working
well.
