Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

November 8th, 2002

Fall fishing is still good for crappie, bass, and catfish anglers on Kentucky Lake. Cooler conditions and a few rainy days have delivered some wind that required a heavy coat but overall, fishing is still holding up well for those braving the elements.

Crappie anglers are still finding action in deep water. Some of the most consistent action has come from depths in the 18 to 23 foot zone in the Paris Landing area and mouth of Big Sandy.

In the upper Big Sandy and West Sandy area some fish were coming from the 8 to 12 foot zones.

Live minnows have been producing well as anglers stalk the deep sides of sandbars where stumps and brush are located. There continues to be a lot of baitfish activity in those areas.

Jigs in the chartreuse and lime colors have also produced. Anglers are tightlining both jig and minnow rigs in a vertical presentation.

Watercolor continues to stay clear in the Big Sandy area with little stain in the main Tennessee River.

Surface temperatures this week have dropped into the 52 to 56 degree range.

Observed lake elevation in the New Johnsonville area and north toward Paris Landing was in the 355.1 range and rising slowly. At Kentucky Dam lake stages were in the 355.2 range and rising slowly after some stable conditions late last week.

Bass anglers are finding a few smallmouth on the rock points. Such lures as hair jigs, jig and pork, and small grubs have been paying off.

A few largemouth are still working the shallow roadbeds and gravel banks where shad are schooling. Shallow running crankbaits and small inline spinners such as Rooster Tails and Mepps have been working well.

Some anglers continue to toss Carolina rigs around shallow points and grass.

Although not many catfish anglers are working the main river ledges, there have been some decent stringers taken lately. This time of year often fools a few anglers and they overlook the fall action that continues into early winter months.

Look for good crappie action to continue in deep water this next week but some improvement could take place in shallow areas if warm sunny days return.
