Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

November 29th, 2002

Fishing this week has been somewhat at the mercy of the elements as cold fronts have been more in favor of the waterfowl and deer hunters than anglers

Brisk north winds have had the open waters of Kentucky Lake white capping a few days and low temperatures had cooled the enthusiasm for most crappie fishermen.

Moderate temperatures are predicted for the weekend and into next week so things could improve for fishermen this weekend and into next week.

Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 354.9 and falling slowly. At Kentucky Dam the readings were expected to be 354.8 this weekend. Upstream at New Johnsonville the elevation was 354.8 and falling slowly as the reservoir returns back down near the winter pool mark.

Surface temperatures were in the 41 to 43 degree range. Watercolor is quite clear in the main Tennessee River and also in throughout the Big Sandy basin.

Crappie anglers who pick their days and dodge the cold temperatures and high winds are still finding action on the deep sides of ledges. This week’s falling lake levels are likely to improve the action in deep water too as the crappie pull back to deeper venues.

Look for the fish to reside in the 18 to 23 foot zones, especially where brush and stumps can be found off the deep side of the drop-off.

Both live minnows and jigs have been paying off with popular skirt colors such as red and chartreuse, lime, and purple and chartreuse. Most anglers are using unpainted leadheads in the clear water.

Bass action has slowed this week due to the colder weather. Not much action in the catfish department either but sauger activity is beginning to pick up as the fish show signs of a winter migration toward spawning areas.
