Report for November 28th, 2000
Fishing this past week has been victim to the cold and windy
weather. A few reports of crappie anglers finding fish in shallow water
came from the upper Big Sandy and West Sandy areas of Kentucky Lake.
The lake has been falling slowly the last few days and was
approaching winter pool throughout the Paris Landing area. Observed
elevation was 354.5 early in the week. Surface temperatures continue to
fall as several nights have seen the mercury dip below the freezing mark
here in the Paris, TN area. Surface temps were in the 45 to 48 degree
range on Monday.
Shad have begun to move back deep and that means the crappie will
be close behind. Look for increased activity in the main lake areas
where submerged sandbars and creek channels are found.
Depths of 18 to 25 feet were producing some fish last weekend and
those depth zones will likely improve with the recent cold spell.
Threadfin shad are vulnerable to quick temperature changes and often go
deep in cold conditions seeking stability.
Winter crappie patterns here will see the fish relate to
structure on the deep sides of ledges and humps where structure is
located.
Bass action has been slow this past week due to the cold fronts
and high skies. The high pressures have curtail activity for bass
anglers the last few days.
