Report for November 23rd, 2001
This week's fishing report indicates
crappie activity is still good,
while bass and catfish remain fair on Kentucky Lake.
After an extended spell of above average temperatures and light
winds, weather conditions have returned to normal with the arrival of a
cold front on Monday. Temperatures fell some 20 to 25 degrees, escorted
by a north wind that slowed fishing earlier in the week.
Sunny days had returned at midweek, however, with cool mornings.
The weatherman indicates some rain may greet anglers these next few days
with cool conditions remaining.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 354.8. The
lake has been falling slowly this week. Surface temperatures were
falling into the 50 to 56 degree range.
Crappie are still hitting good on the deep ledges. A lot of fish
are
coming from main lake sandbars in such depth ranges as 18 to 22 feet.
The structure off on the deep sides of ledges is holding some nice
crappie, although you'll find several small fish in the same zone.
With the cooler conditions, it's likely the shad will back off the
shallow banks and flats where they've been cruising for several weeks
now.
The warm weather lately had the fish in an extended fall pattern.
Shallow stake beds and brush piles have been paying off. Some successful
reports had been coming in from the 7 to 9 foot range.
Jigs fished vertically over submerged structure have been paying off as
have live minnows fished on the double-hook, bottom-bumping rigs.
Popular color choices have been red and chartreuse, grape and
chartreuse, and aqua blue with some red metal flake mixed in.
Bass have been fair with some smallmouth and Kentucky spotted bass
showing up. Anglers working the gravel banks and rock points are finding
the bass taking shad colored crank baits. Some fish are still taking
spinnerbaits as anglers work visible logs and shallow stumps. Jig and
pig combos have worked too.
Some white bass are still hitting on shallow flats as they chase
shad. Watch for the gulls to lead you to the feeding venues. Working a
small Rooster Tail spinner will put you in the action fast.
Some catfish are still coming from the main riverbank. There's been
some current this week and that's helped catfishermen. Such baits and
cut shad, liver, and nightcrawlers are still paying off.
