Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

November 1st, 2002

Fishing has been good this week as the peak of fall colors have coincided with some good crappie and bass fishing on Kentucky Lake.

Cold weather is predicted this weekend, which will likely curtail activity for both the fish and the fishermen. Brisk north winds are expected to make it feel more like duck hunting weather than fishing conditions.

I had some good catches of crappie this week while backing off and working the main lake ledges with double hook bottom bumping rigs. Live minnows have worked well as the fish have been relating to the deep sides of the drop-offs in 18 to 23 foot zones.

Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was near the winter pool mark. Readings were in the 354.4 range while at Kentucky Dam the elevation was 354.7. The lake has been falling slowly.

Surface temperatures were in the 60 to 62 degree range. Look for a drop in surface temperatures this weekend however.

Crappie seem to have chosen deeper water lately as falling lake levels a week or so ago pulled a lot of fish out of midrange stakebeds and brush piles.

A few scattered fish were coming from 12-foot structure in the upper Big Sandy basin and West Sandy but the bulk of fish in the Paris Landing area were much deeper.

The fish are in good shape and sporting a hefty profile indicating an abundance of shad.

After this weekend’s cold front expect the crappie to remain on the deep sides of ledges. Action will likely fall off for a few days but should pick up as stable weather returns next week.

Bass anglers are still finding good luck while tossing crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Some good fish have been taken on shallow flats back in the bays where schools of shad can be found. The gulls will show you where the baitfish activity is.

Mixed in with some good largemouth and spotted bass have also been a few white bass.

Rock banks and sloping gravel points continue to produce for bass anglers. A few nice smallmouth are still coming from main lake ledges and humps.

Unfortunately, the approaching cold front will have an adverse effect on fishing patterns but look for improvements by the middle of next week.
