kentucky lake fishing report
by Steve McCadams

Report for November 11th, 2000

Fishing this week on Kentucky Lake remains good for crappie anglers.
Earlier in the week some wind and rain greeted fishermen and while inclimate weather slowed activity for a day or two, things have returned to normal.

Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 355.1 with
surface temperatures falling somewhat after a series of cool nights. Water temperatures are in the 60 to 64 degree range.

Some nice stringers of crappie are being taken in the 6 to 12 foot
depths as anglers continue dunking 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jigs around submerged stakebeds and brushpiles. Colors such as chartreuse with glitter, white and clear, lime and white, purple/chartreuse are a few popular combinations.

There are still some good crappie hanging out in deep water. The main
lake ledges where structure can be found is producing some fish that seemed to have stayed in a summer pattern lately. Depths of 20 to 24 feet were producing this past week as anglers dipped jigs and minnows
around the stumps and brush with a tightline, bottom bumping technique.

Live minnows are still producing good too. And, some anglers are
tipping jigs with minnows to entice more strikes.

While a lot of small crappie are being caught, there's still some big
ones mixed in so it's worthwhile to plan a trip.

Bass action continues to be fair with smallmouth getting the most
attention. Some dandybronzebacks are being caught as anglers fish hair jigs, jerk baits, crankbaits and some surface lures. A few are being caught on curly tail grubs.

Largemouth are being taken on spinnerbaits and crankbaits but most
veteran anglers are having trouble catching fish 14 inches or longer. There are, however, several reports of small fish being taken in good numbers and that's a positive observation. Hopefully, those little ones
will grow in the year ahead and make it up to legal size.

Some rocky points and exposed stumps and crappie beds are producing some largemouth. Shad colored crankbaits are getting the most attention.
