Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

March 7th, 2002

The fishing scene this week on Kentucky Lake had a little bit of winter and spring weather bumping heads. Early in the week a severe cold front had nighttime temperatures dipping to 14-degrees in the Paris area. By midweek, however, the sun had chased away the north wind and anglers were shedding coats to the tune of 60-degree plus days.
Crappie anglers have been finding fishing to be quite a challenge this week as the backside of the cold front, coupled with some windy days, have made for tough fishing. Generally speaking, the fish are stubborn to bite and quite scattered.
Some fish are lingering in the main lake areas where drop-offs are holding a few fish on the deep sides. The most productive depths in the Paris Landing area have been 20 to 25 feet this week.
In the upper portion of Big Sandy and around West Sandy a few fish were showing up in deep brush piles and manmade stake beds in 7 to 12 foot depths.
Surface temperatures last week had climbed into the 51 to 53 degree range only to fall back to a cool 41 degrees early this week. Then, at midweek readings were slowly rising into the 46 to 48 degree range.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was in the 354.4 range and stable. Watercolor was sporting a good stain for fishing.
There appeared to be a shad die-off this week, which is normal when sudden temperatures changes occur and catch the tiny baitfish up shallow. The threadfin shad are vulnerable to sudden drops in water temperature and go into shock.
That appears to have been the case early this week as gulls by the hundreds were gorging themselves out on Big Sandy River. And, you could see a few quivering shad float by while you were fishing too.
Such a scenario makes it tough on anglers for a few days as the fish have a sudden abundance of bait that's easy to catch.
Look for action to improve, however, when stable weather returns and surface temperatures climb back into the lower 50's. The weatherman is predicting another cool front this weekend. Unfortunately, that's typical March weather.
Bass anglers saw some improvement at midweek with the rise in surface temperatures. Jig and pig combos and a few crawfish colored crankbaits were producing but overall action was fair at best.
March is month where a variety of weather patterns come and go. But hang in there, as it can get better just as quick as it gets bad!
