Report for March 1st, 2002

Since last week's fishing report anglers along Kentucky Lake had enjoyed spring like weather last weekend, only to find brisk north winds and a cold front entering the picture at midweek.
Crappie anglers continue to find fish along the deep sides of ledges in the main lake area but fish remain scattered. Depths of 18 to 24 feet were producing some good sized fish earlier this week as structure, such as stumps and brush just off the breaks, seemed to be the most productive.
Watercolor in the Paris Landing area was sporting some stain but a good color for fishing. Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was 354.4 at midweek. The reservoir has remained fairly stable this week.
Surface temperatures had climbed into the 51 to 53 degree range last weekend. However, expect surface temps to drop dramatically this week with the approach of the cold front where night time lows are predicted to drop into the teens.
With cooler conditions in the region, look for crappie to remain deep, as shad are likely move back deep to main lake venues this week, giving them a better comfort zone when water temperatures change quickly.
Threadfin shad are vulnerable to quick temperature inversions and go into shock when they're caught in shallow water. Thus, expect them to stay deep this week, keeping the crappie out there with them.
Live minnows were producing as were jigs tipped with minnows. Anglers were using tightlining techniques and bumping bottom in their quest for structure and strikes. Some anglers were slow trolling using spider rigged techniques where multi-pole presentations presented different baits.
Jig colors producing this week seemed to be black and chartreuse, green and yellow, with some chartreuse variations using red metal flake.
A few small crappie were showing up but anglers were landing some hefty sized fish that were sporting full stomachs and in good shape. However, the bites were quite light, even from the larger fish.
Bass fishing had improved last weekend but cooler temperatures this week are expected to slow things down.
Temperatures are expected to moderate by next week but the weatherman indicates a few more cold days are ahead. Look for anglers to resume activity very soon as deep water crappie are likely to get very active in the weeks ahead.
