Report for June 8th, 2001
This week's Kentucky Lake fishing report has
action still good in the crappie and bass departments. Water levels have
been almost a foot above normal earlier this week due to abundant
rainfall both here and to the south. Observed elevation was 359.9 here
in the Paris Landing area at midweek. Lake stages were falling, however,
late Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. Look for the lake to drop a few
inches each day until TVA gets it back down around the 359 summer pool
level.
Surface temperatures were in the 72 to 77 degree range this week. Water
color was clear in most of the Big Sandy basin but some dingy water
color could be found in the main Tennessee River channel areas and
around islands.
Crappie continue to hit good and anglers have boated some decent
stringers this week in depths of 13 to 15 foot manmade brushpiles and
stakebeds.
Deep water crappie anglers continue to find fish on the ledges out in the
main lake too. Crappie are being taken in the 20-foot zones as anglers
tightline jigs and bottom bumping rigs baited with minnows.
There's been a few cool days with some rain and cloud cover that seemed to
stimulate fish activity. The threat of thunderstorms has been a factor
too as wind has played havoc on the open water area a few days. Still,
crappie fishing has been good overall and worth planning a trip.
Bass action has improved lately with a variety of techniques producing.
Some anglers are finding bass in shallow weedbeds and buck bushes,
especially where pin minnow schools are found. Tossing spinnerbaits,
jerkbaits, buzzbaits and pitching a few jig and
pig combos has produced some strikes this week. The cloudy days have
helped for shallow water bass anglers.
Other anglers are working the ledges with Carolina rigged worms and
lizards. Finding points extending out from the main shorelines has been
good for several tournament winners.
There's a lot of small bass being caught around the submerged weedbeds as
minnows are really hanging around there. While there's still not much
milfoil grass to be found, there is some coontail moss and pondweed
aquatic vegetation out there.
A few treetops are holding bass too. Those along the main lake and around
islands seem to be holding minnows and the bass are not far behind.
Catfish action has been fair this week with some crappie anglers tying
into catfish as they work the deeper brushpiles out on the main lake
flats. Depths of 13 to 15 feet are producing some catfish as anglers
work nightcrawlers off the bottom.
A few scattered schools of white bass have shown up along the deep ledges.
Working a jigging spoon or trolling deep diving crankbaits has produced
as has casting inline spinner such as Rooster tails.
Several small sauger continue to bite too but most are below the legal
length limit of 14-inches.
Overall, fishing is good on Kentucky Lake so don't let your hooks rust
before going again.
