ANGLERS HOPING FOR COOLER WEATHER

Fishing this week on Kentucky Lake has been hot for those braving the humidity but bass, catfish, and crappie are still hitting good. And, some white bass action has been reported along the main Tennessee River.

Kentucky Lake has been falling slowly this week. Observed elevation in the Paris Landing area has been 358.4. Downstream at Kentucky Dam the elevation was in the 358.5 range.

Surface temperatures are in the 88 to 90 degree range this week as hot days and warms nights have been a factor. A slight cooling trend is in the forecast this weekend, which may lower surface temperatures.

Hefty stringers of bass continue to come from make lake ledges as anglers toss big crankbaits, jig and pig combos, Carolina and Texas rigged worms.

Recent tournaments have seen some five-fish limits averaging in the 4-pound plus range. Most of those fish are coming from ledges where stumps and other structure is located near deep-water drop-offs.

There are still some bass shallow as pin minnows are present around boat docks, bridge piers, and treetops. Tossing a spinnerbait and worms around cover and weed beds has produced some strikes and there’s still some top water action to be had in the early morning and late afternoons.

Crappie are holding on the deep sides of main lake ledges in the 20 to 25 foot zones. However, a few fish have been taken is 13 to 15 foot zones around manmade fish attractors.

Anglers using live minnows have been scoring as they work bottom-bumping rigs around stumps along the ledge and deep sides of sandbars.

Catfish have been fair with some action still along the main river channel bank in depths of 20 to 25 feet. There have been a few fish in the flats and at creek mouths near the main river.

Some current has been present and that has helped stimulate catfish activity along the main riverbank.

Catalpa worms are out and that’s one of the favorite baits for catfishermen this time of year. The big green leaf trees are sporting a lot of worms in places. Other popular baits have been nightcrawlers and chicken liver. Live minnows have worked too.

A few anglers are trolling main lake ledges and catching some sauger and white bass in the early morning and late afternoon periods.

Some mayflies have been hatching this week but action has been mixed from bluegill and other panfish.

Night fishing is picking up for both bass anglers and some white bass fishermen who are using floating lights around main river areas and bridges.
