Campbell County Student Wins Tennessee Junior Duck Stamp Contest

A portrayal of a pair of Canada geese won Best of Show in the 2002 Tennessee Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest held March 28th at the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge. Amber Williams, a 17-year-old from Jacksboro in East Tennessee won top honors with her entry of a pair of Canada geese entitled "Geese at Cove Lake".

The winning entry included a bit of drama, due to a slight mix-up. The painting had to be transported all the way across the state on the very last day to meet the entry deadline. Thanks to a dedicated art teacher and a willing member of the TWRA, the painting made it in time and turned out to be the "Best of Show". Here's more...on the winning entry's race to beat the clock.

Also entered in Tennessee's eighth Junior Duck Stamp Contest were over 680 individuals in four different age group categories. The other eleven finalists and first place winners in their category included Kaylee Ferguson of Chattanooga; Ryland Guthrie, Courtney Cape, Jayne Wilkerson and Megan Robinson of Dyersburg; Hannah Carlton of Knoxville; Megan Berg of McEwen; Justin Tipton of Johnson City; Colin Clendenin of Halls; Savanna Kennedy and Jessica Mefford of Lafollette.

Ribbons and other prizes will be presented to the top 100 winners at an awards ceremony at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville on Saturday, May 18 at 10:00 am. Ms. Williams will receive a $1000.00 scholarship provided by philatelist Mrs. Jeanette Rudy along with other prizes including a framed 2001 Federal Duck Print.

The Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge in partnership with the Tennessee Conservation League and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency sponsored the contest. The judges for this year's contest were Randy Cook with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Daphne Sewing of the U.S. Forest Service, Land Between the Lakes; Ralph McDonald, professional wildlife artist; Patricia Miller of Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency; and Marty Marina of the Tennessee Conservation League.

This month Williams' artwork moved on to the national competition in Ocean City, Maryland where her entry received honorable mention in competition with 50 other state best of show winners. The national winning entry depicted a pair of mallard ducks painted by Nathan Closson of Montana.

This artwork will become 2002-2003 Federal Junior Duck Stamp, which is sold for $5 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the national sponsors of the contest.

In Tennessee, the previous four year's Best of Show entries from this contest have been made into a state waterfowl collector stamp available from Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. All of these stamps can be purchased at a cost of $10 per stamp by calling (615) 781-6585.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest is not only an art contest. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service consider this a major outreach program to teach youth about the importance of waterfowl and wetlands conservation.

As each student chooses a waterfowl subject for their entry, they are encouraged to learn about that bird and its requirements for survival. A Junior Duck Stamp curriculum guide available to educators focuses on conservation messages. All students, homeschoolers, teachers and their schools are recognized through the program where they and the wildlife resources benefit.

The 36 First, Second and Third Place winners will be on display at locations around the state throughout the following year. For more information about this program, display locations or to purchase a Junior Duck Stamp, call the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge at 731-642-2091.
