Big Bass Tips Scales for Josh Powell
by Steve McCadams

  www.stevemccadams.com

December is a month when most sportsmen think about stalking a big deer, calling a few ducks and geese, or perhaps walking behind a pack of beagle hounds or wide ranging birds dogs.
Not so for local angler Josh Powell. The warm weather earlier this month caused his fishing pox to act up. So, ignoring the off-season and taking advantage of the unusual weather, Josh decided to wet a hook.
A few casts later he had landed what could be the largest bass in recent times for any area angler. His trophy largemouth tipped the scales at 11 pounds, 3 ounces!
"I took it to the Big Sandy Post Office where Postmaster Donnie Dodd weighed it for me on certified scales so the weight is accurate," said an excited Powell when asked for details of his catch.
What was the hot lure during this cold month? The hefty bass fell prey to a crawfish crankbait made by Normark. The lucky lure was tied to 17-pound test monofilament so he was armed with good, heavy line.
"I was fishing a small farm pond that was only about one or two acres in size," commented Powell. "I had taken a few good bass there before up around the seven to eight pound range. Earlier that day I landed four and five
pound bass."
"I took it to taxidermist Dickie Wooten to have mounted 'cause it's the biggest one I ever expect to catch," his voice echoing with excitement some two-weeks after the catch.
The fish measured almost 26-inches long, said the 19-year old angler.
When asked what he had done with the other large fish that day and in times past he quickly indicated that "catch and release" was part of his thinking on fishing.
"I toss 'em back so they might bite again some day. That's what I do with my bass in ponds."
Powell said he fished small ponds a lot and sometimes fishes Kentucky Lake with his dad Stan. Occasionally we hook up the boat and head to the big lake.
There are a lot of bass anglers in these parts who have never seen a largemouth this big, much less catch one. And, hearing about a lunker like this in the month of December is even more bazaar.
Fishing tales come and go but this big bass likely made a most unusual Christmas present for Josh Powell. He landed the biggest bass this writer has ever heard of around these parts and is now the envy of practically every bass angler who ever cast a lure.
When someone asks him about the biggest fish he has every caught, he won't have to make up a tall fish tale. His story will top most and it's likely to make a few local anglers dust off the rods and reels and turn to casting, even if it is December!
A tip of the hat to Josh Powell and his huge bass that didn't get away. Soon it will hang from the wall and spawn a few stories when family and friends stop by. It will be a conversation piece for a long time and rightfully so. After all, how many anglers do you know of that have ever landed an 11-pound bass in Henry County in the month of December?
