Kentucky Lake Fishing Report
Brought to you by: Fishtale Lodge

Report for January 18th, 2002

Winter fishing on Kentucky Lake has been holding up well for some dedicated crappie, sauger, and catfish anglers.
Overall, the moderate weather has been kind to fishermen but not too friendly to waterfowl hunters in the region.
Some good reports were coming in from catfish anglers who tested the waters of the New Johnsonville Steam Plant harbor this week. The warm water discharge often attracts shad in big numbers this time of year as surface temperatures there can climb into the mid to upper 50's.
The catfish love the warm water too but are there mainly in search of a hefty meal and the shad draw them like a magnet.
There have also been some catfish caught on the main river channels and deep holes in the main river itself. A few people know about the good winter fishing but the bulk of anglers overlook the hot action during these cold months.
Crappie fishermen are scoring success as they continue to stalk the deep confines of the main lake creek channels, humps, and riverbanks. Finding those deep stump fields and brushy areas along the deep sides of ledges will put you in touch with some fine winter crappie who have an appetite.
Depths of 18 to 25 feet continue to produce. Live minnows and jigs fished vertically around the structure will produce.
From Lake Barkley comes some good reports where anglers in the Saline Creek area have been casting jigs in the stained water there and finding crappie in the 6 to 9 foot zones.
Sauger fishing has been making some news lately as anglers work the main riverbanks and holes around the mouth of Duck River, New Johnsonville Bridge, and further south toward Diamond Island and toward the Pickwick Dam sector.
There's even been a few bass taken recently as anglers work jig and pig combos, along with some slow moving crankbaits and jigging spoons. And, a few light tackle anglers are working those slow moving leadhead jigs with a grub along the sloping ledges.
Kentucky Lake's elevation has been somewhat stable, hanging around the 354.4 mark the last week or so. Surface temperatures are in the 33 to 36 degree range.
