Winter fishing for crappie is attracting a few
anglers to the deep-water patterns. The cold water is keeping most of
the fish in their deep venues of main lake ledges and river channels
where submerged stumps and brush can be located.
Depths of 18 to 25 feet have been producing some decent stringers as
anglers tightline jigs and live minnows on bottom bumping rigs. Stalking
the deep confines can be productive during winter months and a few
dedicated claim it to be their favorite time for finding concentrations
of hefty crappie.
Kentucky Lake has been giving up some good size fish on days when
winds have been calm so anglers could work the open water areas.
Some success has come from anglers working 1/8 to ¼ ounce jigs on
light spinning tackle and bumping structure on the deep sides of the
sandbars. The key seems to be finding structure just off the edge of the
break as crappie are relating to the ledges but favoring the deep sides.
It's normal to find the fish deep when surface temperatures fall
into the low to mid 30's. The shad are staying deep and that keeps the
crappie right there with them.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area this week was
354.2. The lake has been stable, staying right on the threshold of the
winter pool elevation mark.
