Funds

Hunters wishing to contribute venison to Tennessee's Hunters for
the Hungry program will find participating dealers are now charging a
discounted fee for the program.
The previously free program was sponsored by donations, primarily
from private individuals. These donated funds, totaling some $21,000 in
2000, have been exhausted, and while the Tennessee Conservation League,
the overall sponsor of the program, is seeking new funds, additional
donations have been pledged slowly.
Hunters are still urged to contribute all, or part, of their
harvested deer to the program, which distributes venison to needy
families through the state's soup kitchens and food banks.
Participating meat processors will still accept donated meat, at a
discounted processing fee of $40. Last year, hunters donated some 25,000
pounds of venison to the Hunters for the Hungry program. So far this
year meat donations have already nearly reached that amount.
The Tennessee Conservation League hopes that hunters will donate
approximately 50,000 pounds of meat to the program by the end of the
2000 deer season.
