Kentucky Lake Fishing Report
Brought to you by: Fishtale Lodge

Report for February 1st, 2002

This week's fishing report from Kentucky Lake has been unusual in terms of both weather and water levels.
Record high temperatures have made it feel like spring has already arrived. The warm, sunny days have really activated local angler's fishing pox. As a result, many have already taken to the water and gotten a jump on the fishing season ahead.
Although high water has dominated the scene this past week, that didn't stop several crappie and bass anglers from testing their favorite spots.
Due to heavy rains in middle Tennessee and northern Alabama, the Tennessee River has been on a rampage. Lake stages were jumping last weekend as swift currents and rising waters sent all kinds of debris downstream.
Large trees could be seen floating at random in the main channel and also in behind river islands.
Muddy water conditions made it tough on anglers in the main Tennessee River area but some smallmouth bass were being caught at the mouth of bays and points where muddy water currents were meeting clear water.
Anglers tossing small hair jigs and grubs were finding some hefty
bronzebacks on those main lake points.
Crappie anglers working the Big Sandy area were finding fish, although somewhat scattered in depth due to the changing lake levels.
Some fish were in 10-foot depths but anglers found the better grade in the 18 to 22 foot ranges. Working main lake brushpiles and stakebeds paid off, as did the open lake ledges where stumps were found.
Jigs with loud colors and painted leadheads were producing as dingy water color commanded some of those loud, fluorescent colors in both jig skirts and leadheads.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area was changing daily. The lake reached a peak of 360.7 in this area but has been falling for the last several days. As this report was worked up, lake stages were in the 359.7 range and falling several inches each day.
Surface temperatures were climbing into the mid 50's due to the unusual warm weather. A cool front is expected for the weekend as the weatherman indicates a return to temperature ranges is forthcoming.
