This page brought to you by: Duck hunters across Tennessee will get another long season and liberal bag limit thanks to a good year on the breeding grounds where duck numbers remain above the long term average. Season dates and bag limits were set this week in Jackson where the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission adopted the proposal from wildlife biologists. Statewide season will again be 60 days with a 6-duck daily bag. The two-segment season will open November 27-28. After a two-day segment season will close for five days. The second segment opens on December 4 and running through January 30, 2011. In the Reelfoot Lake zone season differs as the opening weekend there will be November 13-14. Second segment there will mirror the statewide segment of December 4 through January 30, 2011. The youth waterfowl hunt will be held statewide on February 5-6, 2011. In the Reelfoot Lake zone the youth hunt will be February 12-13, 2011. Hunters will see a light change in the daily bag limit where an additional pintail has been added, allowing two daily compared to just one last year. All other species will the same as last year allowing not more the four mallards with a maximum of two hens. “It’s has been a wet year on the breeding grounds in North Dakota and across portions of Canada such as Saskatchewan where a lot of ducks that winter in Tennessee raise,” said TWRA waterfowl biologist Tim White. “A lot of water is present there now and that will also increase survival rates for young ducks reared in the prairie pothole region.” White said last year a lot of ducks stopped and raised in the Dakotas as water was abundant there and portions of Canada were dry. He said the western portion of the flyway had flooding before Christmas and that may have pulled a lot of ducks west of Tennessee. Meanwhile, the stage is set for a good fall flight thanks to abundant water on the breeding grounds both during and after this year’s hatch. Southern duck hunters always depend on winter weather to push ducks our way but it’s good to know the ducks are there and will wing our way if cold fronts do their job this winter.
