Latest Duck Counts for Tennessee National
Wildlife Refuge
by
Steve McCadams
www.stevemccadams.com
Waterfowl counts from
the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge have been slow in coming but a long
overdue survey was taken on Monday, January 8. Until Monday a survey had
not been taken since December 19.
Numbers of ducks increased from 125,000 on the previous survey to
225,000 in this week's count. According to U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the
present numbers are 24 percent above the five-year average for this time
of year here on Kentucky Lake.
A breakdown of the three units revealed Duck River holding 138,000
ducks, followed by Big Sandy with 83,000 and the smaller Busseltown unit
holding 3,500.
Geese are still well below their five-year average. The survey
indicated a total of 7,000 geese on the refuge, which is 42 percent below
the five-year survey for this time of year.
Duck River had 3,400 geese, followed by Big Sandy with 2,300 and
Busseltown with 1,300.
Area ducks hunters are still singing the blues, however, as overall
reports are slow as to hunter success. Both private and state wildlife
management areas are not indicating much in the way of duck activity.
Some brisk north winds and cooler conditions would be welcomed by most
hunters who have chalked up a lot of slow days thus far this season.
