Report for December 8th, 2000
This week's fishing report indicates crappie are still hitting
good on the deep sandbars and submerged creek channels in the open
waters of Kentucky Lake. Depths of 12 to 22 feet are accounting for some
good stringers with most anglers keying in on the 18 to 22 foot areas.
Kentucky Lake has been falling slowly this week and is near the
winter pool reading of 354 here in the Paris Landing area. Surface
temperatures are in the mid to upper 30's with some icing in shallow
areas earlier this week.
Crappie are relating to the deep sides of the ledges where stumps
and brush can be found. Jigs and live minnows are producing as anglers
stalk the structure with double hook, bottom bumping rigs and leadhead
jigs fished in a vertical presentation.
Color combos that have been appealing to crappie lately have been
purple/chartreuse, lime/white, pink/chartreuse and red/chartreuse. Many
anglers continue to tip jigs with minnows to entice strikes.
Look for the crappie to remain deep throughout the current cool
spell as shad stay deep. However, a warming trend next week could see
some fish move up and occupy the 12 to 14 foot zones.
Sauger action has improved slightly along the Tennessee River with
a few fish coming from the Duck River area and further south toward
Pickwick Dam.
Bass action has been slow this week due to the cold weather.
