kentucky lake fishing report

Report for December 4th, 2000

This week's fishing report around the Paris Landing area of Kentucky Lake, located near Paris, TN., indicates improvement over last week, especially for crappie anglers. Stable weather has returned and temperatures have rebounded back to normal or above normal in some instances. However, a slight cooling trend is in the making which will suit the waterfowlers just fine but may curtail fishing somewhat.

Observed lake elevation was 355.3. That's up several inches over last week in the aftermath of some rainfall throughout the region. Look for lake levels to begin falling slightly this week as TVA draws Kentucky reservoir back down hear summer pool elevation of 354.

Surface temperatures were in the 44 to 48 degree range during the day but slightly cooler at night as the mercury dipped into the low 30's throughout the week.

Crappie anglers are finding fish on the deep ledges in the 18 to 25 foot depths. Jigs are producing but so are live minnow presentations on the double hook bottom bumping rigs. Color combinations that are working best seem to be red/chartreuse, chartreuse/blue, black/chartreuse and some lime green sporting metal flake within the skirts.

The rising lake levels also stimulated some action for anglers working the deeper manmade fish attractors such as brush piles and stake beds. The 9 to 14 foot range was producing some decent fish as angler vertical fished jigs right down in the structure.

Action for crappie anglers should hold up well this next week, barring any windy days that prohibit anglers from working the open water areas.

Not much to report from bass anglers as action was slow with a few smallmouth being taken as anglers work the deep ledges with light tackle such as leadhead grubs, Roadrunners, etc...

Sauger action should begin to improve further south on the river in the next few weeks as well.

Remember to dress warm when winter fishing and realize your limitation during this season.
