Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:
December 20th, 2002
Fishing this week has been the victim of some high winds, although
moderate temperatures have been inviting anglers out for some winter
crappie fishing.
Last weekend a few crappie were taken in 12 to 15 foot zones as the
lake was rising at that time and warmer surface temperatures seemed to
send a few fish toward shallow areas.
However, lake levels have been falling steady this week and that
seems to have pulled most of the crappie back to the deep sides of the
main lake ledges in the Paris Landing area. Up Big Sandy there have been
some fish taken in 10 to 12 foot zones around Britton Ford and
Springville pumphouse.
Currently, surface temperatures are in the low to mid 40’s and have
warmed since last week. Watercolor has some stain to it this week, due
to the high winds that have whipped up shallow shorelines and sandbars.
Thunderstorms at midweek have also sent some runoff into the lake,
bringing with it some dingy water to several main lake areas and bays.
Observed lake levels at New Johnsonville were predicted to be 355.1
this weekend. Downstream at Kentucky Dam lake stages were slightly lower
with a prediction of 354.6 by this weekend. The lake has been falling
several inches each day since last weekend.
Look for winter crappie action to continue on the deep sides of main
lake ledges in the weeks ahead. Anglers may have to pick their days this
time of year as the cold weather or windy conditions dictate when and
where anglers can hold the boat this time of year.
