Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:
December 13th, 2002
From the
fishing scene comes reports of improvement in the crappie department
after a lull in the action last week.
Last
week was a good one for duck hunters as they enjoyed the cold fronts and
blistery north winds but it was tough on anglers who were attempting to
test the open waters of Kentucky Lake.
The last
few days have been kind to anglers as light winds and moderate
temperatures have returned favorable conditions for those stalking the
main lake areas.
Last
week’s cold snap caused a shad kill in some areas of Kentucky Lake as
the dramatic drop in surface temperatures sent many threadfin shad into
shock. The situation isn’t that unusual as many of the tiny baitfish get
caught in shallow water during warm days only to fall victim to quick
declines in the surface temperature.
Threadfin shad are vulnerable to quick changes in surface temperatures
and go into shock. This results in massive die-offs and that means tough
times for anglers, especially a few days after the initial kill.
Crappie
and other species often find easy pickings and that makes it tough on
anglers.
That
seemed to be the cast late last week and early this week as many crappie
anglers were finding it tough to find and catch fish. Some anglers
reported seeing fish on their LCRs along the deep ledges and around
structure but couldn’t get them to hit a minnow or a jig.
Action
improved by midweek and anglers were seeing some results coming from 17
to 22 foot zones in the Big Sandy area around Sulphur Well Island and
out near Mansard Island. Some success was also reported in the Paris
Landing area too.
Look for
action to keep improving this week as moderate weather remains in the
forecast.
Jigs in
the purple and chartreuse with metal flake, along with live minnows were
working well.
Anglers
will likely see the deep sides of main lake ledges continue to hold
schools of crappie. However, some crappie may move up into bays if
warmer conditions remain so watch for action to improve in the 13 to 15
foot zones.
Surface
temperatures were down in the mid to upper 30’s early in the week.
Watercolor was quite clear throughout most of the reservoir.
Observed
lake elevation at New Johnsonville was 355.5 and rising slowly. At
Kentucky Dam the elevation was 355.3 and also rising slowly.
