April 8th 2008

Last Saturday’s Crappie USA event here on Kentucky Lake had 61 boats braving the elements as a brisk east wind and cool temperatures teamed up with high water to provide quite a challenge to anglers.

Anglers were fishing one of two divisions for a seven fish limit. Top team in each division earned a berth into the Crappie USA Classic and the top ten teams get to advance to regional competition.

Taking the top spot in the amateur division were Parisians Ralph Dillard and Scott Watson with a limit weighing 11.15 pounds that earned them $850. Their fish came from south of the TVA power lines in Big Sandy where they fished 12 to 16 foot stakebeds with yellow glow tube jigs. Second place went to Larry and Scott Buchanan of New Concord, KY with a limit weighing 10.61 pounds earning them $450. They credited their catch to the 23 foot depths in Blood River.

In the semi-pro division the father and son duo of Larry and David Sisson of Wingo, KY fished live minnows at Blood River in 23 foot depths to land a limit weighing 12.66 pounds and take the tournament’s top prize of $!,050. They supplemented their winning stringer with the big fish of the day thanks to a 2.77-pound slab that brought them another $580.

Second place went to Tim and Pam Ridley of McKenzie for a limit weighing 12.48 pounds earning them $550. They fished 12-22 foot manmade fish attractors in both Big Sandy and over on the Tennessee River area. Their catch came while using locally made Teezer jig heads with chartreuse/purple and yellow Southern Pro Umbrella tube skirts. They also received an additional $250.00 for the Ranger Cup Award in the Semi-Pro Division.
