This past weekend Crappie USA held the 2006 Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic at Sheffield, Alabama where nearly 400 anglers from 22 states competed for a purse of $175,000.00. This was one of the most exciting classic finishes in the history of Crappie USA with less than one half pound deciding the battle for first place in the semi-pro division. Taking first place was the team of Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman of Tiptonville, TN with a 2 day total weight of 22.84 pounds. Ronnie and Steve were fishing brush tops where these fish were hidden. “It was a very unique tournament”, said Ronnie Capps. “You had to put the bait in a very small spot just above these fish to get a bite. We lost several fish trying to get them out of the brush tops”. Second place went to the McKenzie, TN team of Tim Ridley and Lynn Gilliam with a weight of 22.45 pounds. Tim and Lynn took home a check for $10,000.00 for second place. Ninth place went to Steve Ferguson of Puryear, TN and Ben Blakely of Murray, KY with 15.57 pounds. For ninth place Steve and Ben received $600.00.
