Last week’s Crappie USA tournament held on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes had beautiful weather. Some sixty boats entered the event to test the waters during what many anglers feel is the peak of the spring crappie run.

Taking first place was the team of Ronnie Capps and Steve Coleman of Tiptonville, TN with a weight of 13.49 pounds. Ronnie and Steve were fishing a trolling pattern in 12-foot depths on flats in Blood River. Their first place check was $850.

Second place went to Jo and Henry Haley of Carmi, IL weighing in 12.42 pounds and taking home a check for $500.00 for second place. Jo and Henry were fishing jigs in 10 feet of water.

In third place was the Ohio team of Rick Solomon of Piqua, OH and Mike Walters of Troy, OH with 12.14 pounds. Rick and Mike were using umbrella jigs in 12 feet of water in Blood River. Rick and Mike took home a check for $475.00 for third place.

Lynn Gilliam and Tim Ridley took fourth place with a weight of 11.9 pounds and receiving a check for $300.00. In fifth place were David Kaler of Mayfield, KY and Henry Kuiper of West Paducah, KY with a total weight of 11.87 pounds.

The top adult/youth team in the Semi-Pro Division was James and Haley Barnes of Corinth, MS with a weight of 7.29 pounds.

First place in the amateur division ended up in a tie with Jim and Lance Freeman of Eddyville, KY and Jerry Trimble of Hardin, KY and Cliff Edwards of Murray, KY with both teams weighing in 12.68 pounds and each receiving $562.50. Jim and Lance were jigging in 10-12 feet of water while Trimble and Edwards were trolling in 10 feet of water for a tie of first place.

Taking third place was Brian Arnett of Kevil, KY and Marc Shoulta of Symsonia, KY with a weight of 12.60 pounds and taking home a check for $350.00. The team was slow trolling jigs tipped with live bait.

In fourth was the team of Scott Mitchell and Jeff Casey of Paducah, KY with 12.14 pounds and receiving $200.00. Finishing out in fifth place was John Shultz and Elisa Hopper of Leoma, TN with a weight of 11.63 pounds and receiving $175.00. Elisa also took second biggest fish of the event at a weight of 2.57 pounds.

The top male/female team in the Amateur division was Dan and Virginia Todd of Murray, KY weighing in 10.32 pounds.

The first place team in each division has now qualified for the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic along with the top 10 teams in each division advancing to the regional event, which will have a payback of some $45,000.00.
