May 19th, 2006
Despite windy conditions, the 12th annual Austin Peay State University
Governors Bass Tournament set a tournament record for entrants last
Saturday out of Paris Landing State Park.
Some 264 boats were launched into Kentucky Lake, and it translated to
almost $27,000 raised for the APSU athletics department. More than $11,000
was awarded to the top 30 finishers in the tournament.
The father and son team of Mike Walker and Jeremy Walker, of Pegram,
checked in a five-bass limit weighing 21.82-pounds to claim the $3,000
first-place prize.
Second place and $1,500 went to the team of David Fields and John
Morgan of Murray, Ky. This same team took first place in 2004 and third
place in 2005.
Sam Lashlee, of Camden, and Rusty Rust, of Mt. Juliet, took third
place with five bass weighing 19.20-pounds, including the tournament's big
bass, a 7.18-pound largemouth. Their efforts earned $2,544, including
$1,544 for the big bass.
One of the tourney's big draws this year was a $12,500 150hp Mercury
outboard motor, donated by B&J Marine that was given away as the grand
door prize for competitors who entered the tournament. Tournament
requirements indicated you had to be present to win. Chris Rushing was the
lucky winner of the motor after Curtis Bowley was first drawn, but had
left the area and returned home.
An $800 Motor Guide trolling motor, donated by Motor Guide, was also
awarded as a door prize to Art Hunter after two participants were drawn,
but failed to answer the call for the prize.
