Kentucky Lake Fishing Report
Brought to you by: Fishtale Lodge

Report for August 17th, 2001

Fishing this week has been good for crappie, while some decent bass and white reports continue to come in. Catfish are prowling too along the main river channel.

Water levels have been the topic of discussion in some areas as the rash of recent thunderstorms has sent a lot of water to the Tennessee River system.

Kentucky Lake has been on the rise for over a week but stabilized on Wednesday. Observed elevation in the Paris Landing area was 358.7, which is up several inches from the week before.

TVA normally has the lake down in the 357 range by now but due to the influx of water runoff, higher levels are being recorded. However, predicted elevation charts indicated the lake would begin falling slowly by this weekend and likely continue a slow drawdown for several days.

Surface temperatures were still in the 85 to 87 degree range. A couple of cool nights and mornings almost made it feel like fall had attempted to sneak in early. Humidity was down and it sure felt good.

Crappie are hitting good in the 13 to 15 foot brushpiles and manmade stake beds. Some fish appear to have moved up with the rising lake levels this week. Minnows and jigs are still producing. And, there's fish relating to the deep sides of the ledges in that 20 to 24 foot zone too. Dunking live minnows on bottom bumping rigs is producing.

Catfish are hitting along the main river channel. Anglers can expect some current this weekend and into next week as TVA will likely be pulling water in order to bring the reservoir back to normal curve of annual draw down.

Catalpa worms, nightcrawlers, chicken livers, and some homemade stink baits are producing well.

White bass have been showing up in the jumps along the main lake ledges lately. It's that time of year when these babies go on a feeding spree. So, keep a rod and reel handy, along with some small spinners and surface plugs if you want to have some fun.

Largemouth are still coming from the main lake ledges where anglers are working the breaks with big crankbaits, jigs, and worm rigs.

Some smallmouth are still coming from the ledges too as anglers toss grubs and tube-style baits on light tackle. Night fishing has been producing some smallmouth and largemouth too. Casting spinnerbaits along rock bluffs and sloping main lake shorelines has been the ticket.

Grassbeds are producing bass too. Working buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, worms, and various weedless lures along the parameter of mats is producing. There's a lot of grass showing up and minnows are really using it.

A few scattered sauger are showing up for anglers trolling deep diving crankbaits. Some bluegill are being caught around bridge piers, boat houses, and treelaps. Mayfly hatches have slowed down.
