Report for August 10th, 2001
This week's fishing report has stripes beginning to
show signs of surface activity along the main river sandbars while
catfish, bass, and crappie continue to hit good. Observed lake
elevation in the Paris Landing area was 358.1 and falling slowly. The
lake had been on a slow rise this past week and stabilized for a few
days. Surface temperatures are in the 86 to 88 degree range.
Stripes, biologically known as white bass, have been in the jumps
this past week on the days where winds were light. The calm days allow
the shad to school near the surface and make it easier for anglers to
see the white bass feeding frenzies too. Windy days keep a nice breeze
on the lake but make it difficult to find surface activity for the
stripes. Trolling deep diving lures with small spinners or spoons
attached will put you in touch with some stripes too.
Expect continued action in the weeks ahead along the main river channel
sand bars. Keep a few Rooster tails, Little George spinners and Hopkins
spoons handy.
Crappie are still hitting good. There's a lot of fish in the 13 to
15 foot zones around manmade structure but a lot of the fish are short
of the 10-inch legal length limit. A few of the larger fish are using
the deep sides of main lake ledges in the 20 to 25 foot depths. However,
fish were scattered but hitting minnows and jigs.
Bass fishing has been slow for most anglers. However, some of the
local tournaments have produced a few nice fish as anglers stalk the
main lake ledges with jig and pig combos, big crankbaits, and Texas or
Carolina rigged worms. Some smaller bass are using the grassbeds too.
Night fishing has been slow but there are a few still hitting
spinnerbaits tossed along sloping gravel banks and rip-rap.
Catfish are fair along the main river channel in depths of 25 to 40
feet. A few days this past week delivered no current and that seemed to
slow the feeding habits. Once current returns, expect the action to
improve. Nightcrawlers, catalpa worms, and chicken livers are producing
best.
Some scattered sauger are showing up in the creel of anglers who
troll the main lake ledges with deep diving crankbaits. There's a lot of
small sauger showing up but not many that meet the 14-inch length limit.
