Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:
August 9th, 2002
This week’s fishing report
indicates some improvement in the white bass (stripes) department, along
with another mayfly hatch taking place in the Paris Landing area.
Observed lake elevation in the New Johnsonville area was 357.2 and
falling slowly. Downstream at Kentucky Dam the reading was 357.4 and
falling slowly. That means the presence of current in the main river
which normally helps both catfishing and stripe action.
Surface temperatures are still very warm as no cool nights have been
able to move in on the hot and humid outdoor scene. Readings were in the
86 to 90-degree range again this week.
Catfish action had improved at midweek with the current stimulating the
bite for anglers working the main riverbank. Depths of 20 to 35 feet
were producing.
Chicken livers, nightcrawlers, catalpa worms, and come commercial stink
baits were accounting for some good fish. Some decent stringers were
coming from the Danville area and up toward White Oak Creek.
White bass were in the jumps but scattered this week at the mouth of the
Big Sandy. I found a few areas where the fish were on top and busting
shad in the early morning hours. However, by midmorning the activity had
subsided.
Plenty of shad were visible too as schools meandered across the top of
the water on their way to nowhere. Occasionally a fish or two would bust
into them.
The white bass were taking small spinners such as the chrome colored
Little George, Rooster Tail, and Blue Fox Vibra Shaft with a white buck
tail. A few fish took top water lures such as the Rebel Pop-R and Heddon
Torpedo.
Look for action to improve in the weeks ahead for surface feeding white
bass. The shad have grown to a larger size and that seems to appeal to
the hungry white bass as they school along main lake flats.
Not much going on in the crappie department as the heat seems to be
taking its toll. Some action is taking place in deep water around main
river channels and sloughs. Depths of 18 to 25 feet were producing a few
small fish but overall, action was slow.
Bluegill and yellow bass were taking advantage of a midsummer mayfly
hatch this week in the Paris Landing area. And, those sometime signals
improved night fishing for white bass.
Bass fishing has been fair with some fish still coming from shallow weed
beds and stickups where anglers are throwing spinnerbaits and worms.
And, there some good fish still lingering on the main lake ledges as
anglers toss big crankbaits and Carolina rigged worms.
Night fishing has been fair as anglers work gravel banks with
spinnerbaits.
