Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:
August 30th, 2002
This week’s fishing report has
had a hint of fall in the early morning air. Some cool breezes have had
anglers thinking about fall fishing patterns already, even though a few
more weeks of warm weather remain.
Observed lake elevation in the Paris Landing area this week was in the
356.1 range and falling slowly. Downstream at Kentucky Dam the lake
stages were in the 356.3 range.
Surface temperatures have cooled slightly with readings in the 81 to 85
degree range.
Bass action has improved lately with several fish coming from shallow
structure such as manmade fish attractors like stakebeds and brushpiles.
Some visible grassbeds are giving up some fish too as the lower lake
levels expose moss and various aquatic vegetation.
There’s some shad activity on the gravel banks in the early morning and
late afternoons too. Tossing a jerk bait that imitates shad movement
will get you some attention as will slow moving crankbaits in the chrome
colors.
Crankbaits and jigs are producing along rock bluffs and points. A few
anglers are still working main lake ledges with jig and pig combos, big
deep diving crankbaits and Carolina rigged worms.
Catfish action is still good along the main river. Anglers continue to
find fish hitting in the 30-foot depth range. Baits of choice have been
leeches, nightcrawlers, catalpa worms, and liver.
White bass action has been fair but still not much to report in the form
of consistent surface activity. Seems the stripes just won’t stay up
long, although a few scattered sightings have taken place.
Crappie action is still fair but anglers will likely seem some
improvement in the weeks to come as the fish follow the shad back into
shallow flats and bays. Warm surface temperatures have kept most of the
fish in the main lake venues but look for that to change soon.
Depths of 16 to 20 feet have been producing a few fish. Some scattered
fish have already begun to occupy manmade fish attractors in 11 to 13
foot zones.
Fall is closer than it has been and look for fish patterns to enter a
transition in the weeks ahead. Cooler days and nights will really change
the fishing scene soon!
