Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

August 2nd, 2002

Fishing this week has been decent for catfish and bass anglers. Most folks are hitting the lake for early morning and late afternoon periods in hopes of dodging some of the heat.

Some good bass have been taken on the main lake ledges as big crankbaits are accounting for many of the success stories. A jig and pig combo and some Texas rigged worms are still producing too.

There’s some grassbeds on shallow flats and around islands that are still giving up some decent fish as anglers toss spinnerbaits and some surface lures such as buzzbaits and jerk baits.

Stripes are showing up in scattered jumps and several anglers are finding them on the deep sides of the sandbars too. Casting such lures as Rooster Tails and jigging spoons is paying off when the fish stay deep.

Some surface activity has been seen near main river areas such as Standing Rock, Leatherwood, and up near Piney Campground.

Look for action to improve in the weeks ahead for white bass action along the main river channel.

Catfish are hitting good on the days when current is present. Several decent stringers have come from the edge of the main river bank in depths of 20 to 35 feet this week. Nightcrawlers and catalpa worms continue to produce as have shiner minnows.

Crappie action is fair with a few fish lingering in some deep stakebeds and brushpiles out on the main lake flats. However, most success has come from the 20 to 25 foot range lately where those deep stump beds are found along the sandbars.

Some night fishing is taking place too for both bass and stripe fishermen. Action under the lights for stripes has improved lately.

Surface temperatures are in the 85 to 89 degree range as there haven’t been too many cool nights. Kentucky Lake’s elevation in the New Johnsonville area was 357.3 and falling slowly. Downstream at Kentucky Dam the observed elevation was 357.5.
