Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

August 23rd, 2002

From the fishing scene comes reports of successful catfish anglers along the main Tennessee River this week. And, some improvement for anglers chasing schools of white bass has been reported in the Paris Landing and Danville sectors.

Observed lake elevation this week at Kentucky Dam was 357, which is up a few inches from last week. TVA is discharging some 34,800 cubic feet per second (cfs) daily which means some current is present in the main river.

Upstream at New Johnsonville the lake elevation was 356.8 and falling slowly.

Surface temperatures were in the 85 to 90 degree range this week.

Catfish action had improved over last week as some good-sized fish were coming from the 30 to 35 foot depths along the main river channel, especially where submerged islands or humps could be found.

Baits of choice continue to be nightcrawlers, shad minnows, catalpa worms, and chicken liver.

Bass action is fair with a few fish roaming the shallow gravel banks and exposed grass beds on the shallow flats and backs of creeks. Some areas of pondweed and what appears to be milfoil is showing up in shallow bays where the water is clear.

A few bass are taking spinnerbaits, worms, and topwater jerk baits around the grassbeds. Some of the main river sandbars are still holding a few bass too. Tossing a big crankbait and Texas or Carolina rigged worms are producing a few scattered strikes.

White bass (stripes) have been busting the surface this week but still somewhat unpredictable as to their duration in feeding sprees. Most anglers are casting rooster tails and other small spinners, along with the vertical presentations of spoons when the fish go deep.

Some topwater action has been observed along the main river on the calm days so keep on the lookout for some fast action.

Crappie activity has been slow this week. The fish are scattered and reluctant to hit for most anglers, although some fish have been taken on the deep sides of ledges in depths of 23-25 feet. Live minnows are producing best.
