Steve McCadams'
Kentucky Lake Fishing Report for:

August 16th, 2002

This week’s fishing report has Kentucky Lake still falling slowly which means some current in the main river area for catfishermen and bass anglers.

Observed elevation at Kentucky Dam was 357 feet above sea level and falling a few inches each day. Upstream at New Johnsonville the lake elevation was also in the 357 range and somewhat stable.

Surface temperatures were in the 85 to 89 degree range this week. That’s slightly cooler than last week.

Catfish have been hitting good along the main river channel this week as anglers bump bottom along the riverbank and submerged islands or humps. Some good stringers are coming from the 30-foot depth range.

Baits of choice have been nightcrawlers, chicken liver, catalpa worms, and large minnows. Look for action to remain good in the weeks ahead, especially on the days when some current is present.

Crappie have been slow lately with some fish coming from deep ledges in the 18 to 24 foot range. Live minnows have produced best as anglers work the drop-offs searching for brush and stumps.

White bass have been fair as a few schools are in the jumps. Overall action has been inconsistent, however, as the stripes are not staying up very long.

Tossing surface plugs will work great when the fish are on top in their feeding frenzy but it’s best to have another rod loaded with a sinking spinner or spoon once the fish go down.

Some anglers are trolling and finding a few fish holding on the main lake ledges.

Bass action had slowed according to most reports but some fish were beginning to show up in the shallow grass beds. With the water dropping there are more patches of grass beginning to show up in the backs of creeks and on shallow flats.

Shad are beginning to run the gravel banks in the afternoons as they feed on tiny insects about an hour before dark and for a short time in the early morning, lowlight periods.

Look for that type action to improve in the weeks ahead and it’s a great time to toss a surface lure.
